AFM Machine
An AFM machine, or Atomic Force Microscope, is a highly sensitive instrument used to examine surfaces at the nanoscale. It works by scanning a very sharp tip attached to a flexible cantilever across a sample surface. As the tip moves over tiny features, it feels forces between the tip and the sample, and these forces cause the cantilever to bend. A laser beam reflected from the cantilever detects these movements with extreme precision, allowing the system to build a detailed image of the surface structure. One of the main advantages of an AFM machine is its ability to measure surface topography with nanometer or even atomic-level resolution. Unlike optical microscopes, it does not rely on light to form images, so it can reveal details that are far beyond the limit of visible light. It is also capable of working with a wide variety of materials, including metals, ceramics, semiconductors, polymers, biological samples, and thin films. Because of this flexibility, AFM is widely used in research laboratories, materials science, electronics, life sciences, and quality control.AFM can operate in different modes depending on the type of information needed. In contact mode, the tip remains in continuous contact with the surface, making it suitable for studying hard samples. In tapping mode, the cantilever oscillates near the surface and lightly touches it at intervals, reducing damage to delicate materials. In non-contact mode, the tip scans just above the surface and senses attractive forces, which is useful for extremely soft or sensitive samples. These modes give users the ability to choose the best measurement method for their specific application.Beyond imaging, an AFM machine can also measure mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and chemical properties of materials. It can map surface roughness, detect adhesion forces, analyze elasticity, and even study molecular interactions. This makes AFM an important tool not only for observing structures but also for understanding how materials behave at the nanoscale.Modern AFM systems are designed with advanced vibration isolation, precise motion control, and user-friendly software. These features improve measurement stability and make it easier to collect accurate data. Researchers can use the machine to inspect sample quality, analyze defects, compare treatments, and support product development. In summary, an AFM machine is a powerful nanoscale analysis tool that provides detailed surface imaging and property measurement. Its precision, versatility, and ability to study many types of samples make it essential in modern science and technology.
